We will be having our October chapter meeting on Wednesday, October 16th at Rothchild’s Catering on Kingston Pike from 12:00 – 1:00 pm. Please come as early as 11:45 to socialize with other members and friends in our industry. Lunch cost will be $25 per person and will be payable by credit card, check, or cash at the door.
Our speaker will be Dr. Mitchell Ishmael discussing the integration of thermal energy storage into building HVAC systems.
Thermal Energy Storage for HVAC: What, How, and Why. Integrating thermal energy storage (TES) into building HVAC systems holds great promise for lowering operational cost, reducing carbon intensity, and providing thermal resiliency, but TES has failed to gain widespread adoption. Through this presentation, I will review thermal energy storage options available for both heating and cooling at residential and commercial scales. This will be followed by a discussion of how these systems can be sized and integrated into building operation. Next, I will provide a case study as an example to quantify the benefits of TES. The presentation will conclude with my thoughts on opportunities and challenges for TES in the current marketplace.
Dr. Mitchell P. E. Ishmael (Shift Thermal Chief Technical Officer). Dr. Ishmael received his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Cornell University, and holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Dr. Ishmael co-founded Shift Thermal to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainably sourced energy through advanced technology and responsible business. The company was founded as part of the inaugural cohort of Innovation Crossroads, Oak Ridge National Laboratory's premier startup program. He has been technical lead for several Phase I and Phase II National Science Foundation and Department of Energy Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) awards, where Shift Thermal's core FLEX thermal energy storage technology was developed. He currently lives in Oak Ridge with his wife, two children, two cats, parakeet, and quite possibly a dog..
