Our April meeting will feature a University of Tennessee senior design team consisting of ASHRAE Student members Ben Webb, Georgia White, and Trey Twickler, under the guidance of Dr. Bill Miller. The team recently submitted a proposal to the Department of Energy for the RACE to Zero international student design competition. The competition entailed the design of an energy efficient home utilizing novel design concepts in order to approach zero energy usage. The team has worked with a group of Architects to create a multi family dwelling using features such as an exterior insulation system and an exhaust heat pump. The team collaborated in conducting heating and cooling load calculations, conducting a cost-energy analysis with the use of BEopt, developing a photovoltaic system for energy production, and selecting HVAC equipment and home appliances. On the weekend of April 17th, the team will travel to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Denver, CO to formally present on the work conducted over the last several months.
The featured speaker for the presentation will be Georgia White, who is a team member on the project. She and Trey Twickler will be traveling to Denver soon after our chapter meeting to present and compete at NREL.
We will also get a student chapter update from Jeremy Miller.
